Question
How do I make up bottle feeds?
Answer
The following steps help you to successfully make up a bottle
feed:
- Sterilise all equipment according to the manufacturers'
instructions or by boiling for 10 minutes
- Boil freshly run water and allow to cool for no longer than 30
minutes until it is approximately 70°C. Don't use artificially
softened water or repeatedly boiled water
- Before preparing the feed, wash your hands. Measure the
required amount of water into the sterilised feeding bottle
- Using the scoop, add the required number of scoops of powder to
the water in the feeding bottle. Don't press the powder down in the
scoop
- Place the cap on the bottle and shake well to dissolve the
powder. Fit a sterilised teat on the bottle and test the milk
temperature on the inside of your wrist. If required, cool the milk
by the holding the bottle under cold running water. The milk should
be warm, not hot
Important
- Use feeds within two hours and always throw away unfinished
feeds
- Do not heat feeds in a microwave oven as hot spots may occur
and cause scalding
- Do not add any other food or liquid to the feed in the
bottle
Don't feed your baby when they are lying on their back as it
makes it difficult to swallow and can cause choking
