Question
How much weight will I gain when I am pregnant?
Answer
Every mum to be is different: some women can feel like they are
putting on pounds from day one, but if you suffer from morning
sickness you may actually lose weight to start with through nausea
and vomiting. Unless you become dehydrated this is nothing to worry
about, but speak to your midwife if you are at all concerned. As a
general rule of thumb you can expect to gain anywhere between 1.5
to 3kg, about 3 to 6lb, in the first trimester and around 0.5kg, or
1lb, a week from then on.
Over the whole pregnancy, an average-sized woman will gain
around 10 to 12kg or 22 to 28lb. But this figure will depend on how
heavy you were at the start of your pregnancy and if you are
expecting more than one baby. Talk to your midwife, who will be
able to advise you on what is healthy for your circumstances.
