Question
How much protein should my 13 month old have a day? He isn't vegetarian so I think 1 to 2 servings of animal protein a day but I don't know how much is a serving. Would cheese and yoghurt count?
Answer
It can be confusing working out how much your baby needs. Rest
assured, if you are giving your little one a balanced and
varied diet and he is eating well, he will most probably be
getting what he needs to grow and develop.
A toddler aged from 1-3 years needs about 15g protein a
day. This means about 5g per main meal. Protein can be found
in milk, yoghurt, cheese, beans, egg, fish and meat so there is no
need to serve only animal protein twice a day. You can add
variety by using any of these suggested ingredients - have a look
at our Recipe Corner in the "Products and Recipes" tab on our
homepage for some ideas.
As a guide, 5g protein can be found in 25g (1tbsp) raw minced
beef, 100g (1 small pot) plain yogurt, 20g (matchbox sized
chunk) cheddar cheese, 150ml (small glass) milk or 100g
(3 tbsp) Heinz reduced salt and sugar beanz.
