Question
My baby's poo is hard and he and struggles to go.
Answer
I'm sorry your little one is unwell at the moment. It's very
common for babies to become constipated and there are a few reasons
why this may be happening.
If your little one is not yet weaned and you are using an infant
formula, he may simply be a bit dehydrated. Offer cooled boiled
water to drink between feeds, if your little one is thirsty.
Dehydration can also cause constipation when babies are weaned.
Make sure you are offering regular drinks in addition to milk feeds
to prevent this. Fruit juice can help to relieve the symptoms of
constipation - why not try one of our Heinz juices, as they are
diluted with spring water and ready to drink?
It may be that your little one is not eating enough fibre to
ensure soft poo that is easy to pass. Babies don't need loads of
fibre but it's still important to give them plenty of fruit and
vegetables, as these provide both fibre and essential vitamins and
minerals. Also include a source of starchy carbohydrate at each
meal, for example, pasta, rice, bread or potatoes.
