Question
My baby is 3 and bit months and very constipated. The doctor has told me to give him juice as he wont have water. He didnt really explain what I buy and what to do.
Answer
It is true that some healthcare professionals recommend giving
children diluted juice when they are constipated as this
can provide some relief.
However, the Department of Health recommends exclusive
breast feeding for the first six months of your baby's life. All
babies are different and develop at different rates. Your baby may
start to show signs they are ready for weaning earlier than six
months. If this is the case and you think your baby may be ready to
start solids, speak to your Healthcare Professional who will be
able to advise you. Babies under 17 weeks should not be given solid
foods.
On this basis, I would not advise using fruit juice for your
baby. I would go back to your healthcare professional to ask if
there are alternative solutions for a baby of 3 months.
I do hope you manage to help relieve your baby's constipation.
Please let us know how you get on.
