Question
My little girl is 1 year and 1 month. She is getting very used to eating lots of different foods - but is still not a huge fan of fruit. She'll eat it mixed together with vegetables like spinach, broccoli, peas or beans. But if you cut up mango, papaya, banana or apple she won't eat it. She'll eat apricots, or prunes or raisens. But anything remotely slimy puts her right off. What can I do?
Answer
It sounds like your little girl is doing really well on her
weaning journey so well done! A lot of toddlers tend to reject
green vegetables like broccoli, spinach and beans as they can taste
quite bitter but your little girl seems to love them which is great
as they are a good source of iron which helps with healthy
development of the brain and immune system.
I wouldn't worry too much if she tends to reject 'slimy' fruits
on their own. We all have our likes and dislikes and that's
fine as long as we still get a balanced diet. Continue to
offer them, as she may learn to get used to them in time. You
could also try chopping up fruits and mixing them with natural
yoghurt or threading them onto a wooden skewer, brushing them with
honey and grilling them for a few minutes. Always remove the
skewer before serving them up to your little one. You could have a
go at the recipe here with different types of fruit.
Good luck and do let us know how you get on.
