Question

What can I expect during the third trimester?

Answer

As the birth gets closer you may experience the following:

  • Feeling puffy and out of puff - You may start to feel breathless as your expanding uterus presses against your diaphragm. Meanwhile water retention is common in later pregnancy and can cause your feet, ankles and fingers to swell. Try to avoid standing for long periods. If swelling is severe and accompanied by headaches, dizziness, nausea or visual disturbances seek immediate medical advice as these can be symptoms of pre-eclampsia.
  • Itchy bump - Your bump may itch from time to time as the skin stretches. Applying moisturising cream can help. But if it is severe, especially at night, contact your GP as this can indicate a rare pregnancy liver disorder.
