Question
My 5 month old has eczema - should he avoid anything when weaning? He is totally breast fed at the moment.
Answer
I completely understand how you may be confused about what foods
to introduce when weaning your little one. Do remember
that the Department of Health recommends exclusive breast
feeding for the first six months of your baby's life. All babies
are different and develop at different rates. Your baby may start
to show signs they are ready for weaning earlier than six months.
If this is the case and you think your baby may be ready to start
solids, speak to your Healthcare Professional who will be able to
advise you. Babies under 17 weeks should not be given solid
foods.
As eczema is an allergic condition, it may be related to other
allergies including food allergies. Before weaning your little one,
I would advise speaking to your healthcare professional who can
advise you on how to introduce foods and check for allergies. As
with any babies, it's best to wean one food at a time and leave it
a few days between introducing different allergens.
