Question
What kind of hard foods can I give my 14 month old baby to eat?
Answer
At 14 months, toddlers can eat most foods, as long as they are
chopped up into small chunks. However, some foods may be an
unsuitable texture and may therefore be a choking risk.
Frankfurter sausages and grapes or other round shaped foods
can be a choking risk, so it's best to slice them lengthways before
giving them to your toddler. Whole nuts are also a choking risk
because of their shape and hardness.
Crumbly or hard, brittle foods like crisps, some crackers or
hard biscuits can also break off into hard lumps and cause choking,
so again, wait till your toddler is older before offering them.
Granola pieces that are hard can also be a struggle for your little
one, especially when mixed with runny milk.
Gristly meat can also be very difficult for you little one to
chew, so try to ensure meat is cooked through but still soft and
tender.
Good examples of harder foods would be slices of raw, peeled
fruit, vegetables or pasta cooked so they are a more adult
texture (al dente) and biscuits and crackers with a melt in
the mouth texture.
