Question

Hi Claire. When can I start using adult gravy granules and ready made sauces and things for my baby's food - so he really can eat the same things as the rest of the family. I'm a working mum, so I do use lots of Dolmio and Bisto and M&S sauces and stuff, which I know contain salt so I'm worried about using them. Thanks Stephanie

Answer

Thank you for your question.

The Department of Health recommends moving onto adult foods at around 12 months of age. Make sure you chop foods up and don't include anything hard like whole nuts.

Children age from 1-3 years should eat no more than 2g of salt a day, and as you have highlighted, some ready made sauces and gravies can contain a lot of salt.  Have you thought about using a lower salt stock for cooking, like Heinz chicken or vegetable stock? Still suitable for all the family, they can help you with cooking family meals that your little one can also enjoy.
