Out and about

Be prepared!

Gone are the days of languishing on a couch for nine months, these days you’re bound to want to be out and about throughout your pregnancy.  This might seem daunting at first but there are lots of ways you can make sure you’re fully prepared.  Here are our top tips.

Morning sickness – carry a few plastic bags in your handbag at all times – just in case – and a small stock of the food and drink items to soothe your nausea.

Over heating – when pregnant your body can’t lose heat as efficiently and overheating can potentially cause problems.  So wear lots of layers that you can take off to help control your temperature.

Sunburn – due to hormone changes your skin can be more sensitive to sun than normal so wear sunscreen and keep in the shade.

Footwork – if you know you’re going to be on your feet wear comfortable, low-heeled shoes as feet swell and legs ache in the later months.

Spa care – saunas and jacuzzis are not safe for pregnant women.

Loos – as your pregnancy progresses you’ll be increasingly reliant on public loos.  Go whenever you have the opportunity.

Abroad – some vaccinations aren’t safe in pregnancy so check with your doctor.  Avoid countries with malaria ie: India, Africa and Central and South America.  Drink bottled water and avoid ice cubes.  Be cautious about eating salad you haven’t prepared yourself.

Notes – carry your midwife’s notes and telephone number with you in the final months.  If your waters break when you are out and about call your midwife immediately.

Did you know?
The size of your breasts doesn’t affect milk supply. As long as your baby is feeding regularly, your body will produce all the milk they need.
