Involving your partner

Involve your familyChances are you’re finding pregnancy all consuming and can think of little else.  However, this is your partner’s baby too so don’t forget to include him.  The more involved he is, the more support you’ll get.

Overall
Direct him to our Getting Involved section.

Suggest going on a healthy eating plan or starting regular swimming sessions together.

Give him plenty of notice about when your antenatal appointments (especially scans) are booked so he can arrange to attend too.

Take him with you on your hospital tour.

There are antenatal classes for fathers, book him onto one.

Discuss your Birth Plan options together.  Check out our You and Your Body / Making a Birthing Plan.

Preparing for labour day
Suggest a dry-run in the car to check the best route to the hospital and how long it will take.

When your due date’s close, ask him to keep the car topped up with petrol and a bag of coins in the glove box for the parking meter.

Pack a hospital bag for him too, including a fresh T-shirt (essential after a heavy night in a hot delivery room), a toothbrush and a stash of drinks and snacks to keep him going.

Prepare him a list, complete with telephone numbers, of who to contact with the good news when your baby is born.

Stay close
Set aside time to just be together and talk.  Try to keep off the subject of your aches and pains and listen to what he has to say.

One area where his commitment may be assured is investigating new positions for lovemaking as your bump size increases.
