Expressing milk

Once you and your baby have settled into breast-feeding, you may want to take a break from time to time so it’s a good idea to get into the habit of expressing your breast milk.

Expressing milk can give you the chance to take a well-earned break.

How to do it
The quickest and easiest way to express is to use a breast pump. You can get one from retailers like Boots or Mothercare where staff will be able to help you choose one that‘s suitable.

When to do it
The best time to express is when you’re feeding your baby, or just after.

Storing expressed milk
Expressed milk can be stored in bottles in a refrigerator for up to 24 hours. Bottles can also be frozen for up to three months. Once defrosted they should be used immediately.

Don’t forget
You’ll need to sterilise the bottles, pump and teats before you use them.
